Helen Gordon Child Development Center is a full-day laboratory Infant/Toddler, Preschool, and Kindergarten program. The Center’s purpose is to provide a quality child development program for children of Portland State University students, staff and faculty and to provide a laboratory training resource for Portland State University students and faculty. In addition, as space is available, the program enrolls children of families from the general community.

Position Summary

The Early Childhood Substitute Assistant Teacher works as needed across the program as a support member of a teaching team in one of the Center’s classrooms. The Early Childhood Substitute Assistant works cooperatively with the other classroom teachers to plan and implement a model early childhood program. The Early Childhood Substitute Assistant acts as a model for classroom aides and practicum students: teaching appropriate skills and techniques by example.

This is a seasonal, intermittent on-call position as detailed in the SEIU collective bargaining agreement Article 49.

Primary Activity A - Administrative
Minimum Qualifications from Classification
  • A minimum of twenty semester hours (thirty quarter hours) of college courses in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or Special Education; OR
  • A Child Development Associate (CDA) credential; OR
  • One year of full-time experience in a certified day care center or comparable child care program.
Additional Minimum Qualifications for this Position

Successful completion of a background check.

Preferred Qualifications

AA or BA degree or equivalent with coursework in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or related fields and one year of experience in an early childhood program.

Environmental Stewardship
Work Days/Hours Intermittent, on-call, up to 19 hours per week. Schedule to be determined.
Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement

The starting salary rate for this part-time position will be between $12.12 and $13.97 per hour, dependent upon qualifications and experience.

This is not a benefits-eligible position.

Pay Range Between $12.12 and $13.97 per hour, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
