The Department of World Languages and Literatures plays a central role in preparing the students of Portland State University to function in the global community. Because we believe that language is central to that ability, we offer instruction in American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Ancient Greek, Modern Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Norwegian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Turkish and Vietnamese. The Department is committed to teaching for proficiency. All of our language classes are designed to develop functional skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking for eventual use in a broad variety of real-world settings.

Programs: We offer undergraduate majors in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish; minor programs in the above languages and in Modern Hebrew, Italian, Persian, Turkish, and Classical Studies. We also have a Certificate in Advanced Proficiency in Russian and a Certificate in Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language.

At the graduate level, we offer the M.A. in World Languages and Literatures with a major in French, German, Japanese, or Spanish and the M.A. in World Literature and Language, with a concentration in two world languages.

Position Summary

The Russian Program at PSU’s Department of World Languages and Literatures invites applications for a renewable one-year position teaching undergraduate Russian language at .7222 FTE. The position is for the academic year (fall .6666 FTE, winter .8333 FTE, and spring .6666 FTE quarters) beginning September 16, 2017, and is renewable. Informational interviews will be conducted by Skype and possibly additional onsite interviews.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Teach 26 credits of undergraduate Russian language and culture courses from the beginning to advanced levels, according to the needs of the program (8 credits/.6666 FTE in fall, 10 credits/.8333 FTE in winter, and 8 credits/.6666 FTE in spring).
• Maintain regular office hours.
• Participate on program, departmental, college and/or university committees as assigned by the Chair and/or Section Head, and regularly attend faculty meetings.

Primary Activity I - Instructional
Minimum Qualifications

- Master’s degree or equivalent in Russian language, literature, linguistics or related field.
- Experience teaching Russian at the college level.
- Native or near-native fluency in Russian and in English.

Preferred Qualifications

- ACTFL OPI training.
- Experience with and affinity for team teaching.
- Experience working with heritage speakers of Russian.

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement

The starting annual salary rate for this position will be $42,660 ($30,809 at .7222 FTE), with an excellent benefits package including 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon Public Universities.
