Position Summary

Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept

Because we believe that language is central to that ability, we offer instruction in American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Ancient Greek, Modern Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Norwegian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Turkish and Vietnamese. The Department is committed to teaching for proficiency. All of our language classes are designed to develop functional skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking for eventual use in a broad variety of real-world settings.

Programs: We offer undergraduate majors in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish; minor programs in the above languages and in Modern Hebrew, Italian, Persian, Turkish, and Classical Studies. We also have a Certificate in Advanced Proficiency in Russian and a Certificate in Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language.

At the graduate level, we offer the M.A. in World Languages and Literatures with a major in French, German, Japanese, or Spanish and the M.A. in World Literature and Language, with a concentration in two world languages.

Position Summary

Portland State University invites applications for a post doctoral Instructorship in Korean Studies for the 2017-2018 academic year, with a potential to renew for up to three years. Ph.D. is required. Applications are encouraged from specialists in any humanities, including cultural studies, arts, or social science discipline whose research relates to Korea. The appointment will be to an appropriate disciplinary department, but with the expectation that the successful candidate will contribute to the broader intellectual life of Korean Studies on campus.

The fellow will be expected to participate in Korea-related events at PSU, as well as teach a 1-1-2 course load (.54 FTE). (PSU is on the quarter system; a typical Instructor load is 3-3-3). The fellow will also conduct scholarly research in the field of Korean Studies (.46 FTE). We encourage candidates who would be interested in teaching one course online.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Teach 16 credits (4 courses) of undergraduate Korean Studies courses.
• Conduct scholarly research in the field of Korean Studies.
• Give one public lecture during the academic year.
• Maintain regular office hours.
• Participate in Korea-related events at PSU.
• Regularly attend faculty meetings.

Primary Activity I - Instructional
Minimum Qualifications

• PhD degree in field of Korean Studies.
• Native or near-native fluency in English.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience teaching Korean Studies at the college level.
• Korean language competence.

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement

The starting annual salary rate for this position will be $43,000 with an excellent benefits package including 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon Public Universities.
