Environmental Science and Management is the study of the interactions between society and the physical, chemical, ecological and biological processes that structure and maintain ecosystems. Our work is critical to understanding and developing sustainable ecosystems, human societies and economies. ESM offers undergraduate degrees in Environmental Science and Environmental Studies, three Master’s degrees, and a joint PhD in Earth, Environment, and Society through the School of the Environment.

Position Summary

The Department of Environmental Science and Management (ESM) at Portland State University (PSU) invites applicants for a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Ecohydrology starting Fall 2018. We are specifically seeking individuals who examine the intersection of ecology and hydrology, including feedbacks between biota and the hydrologic extremes across a range of spatial and temporal scales. Areas of scholarly emphasis include impacts of climate and hydrologic extremes (e.g. drought, flooding, etc.) on the integrity and resilience of both natural and human-dominated ecosystems. Experience with undergraduate teaching and postdoctoral research experience are desirable.

This position is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ (CLAS) interdisciplinary cluster hire focusing on Environmental Extremes (impacts, adaptations, and solutions), which includes faculty in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Math and Statistics, English, and Communication.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a strong record of research, funding, and publication. The successful candidate will engage in graduate student advising as well as service to the department, university, and the broader scholarly community. The successful candidate will teach courses from introductory to advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in watershed hydrology, and will contribute to one of the undergraduate core courses in either the Environmental Science or Environmental Studies degrees. The successful candidate is expected to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration, including with other members of the cluster hire. The candidate will also find outstanding opportunities to collaborate with faculty within the School of the Environment, CLAS, the School of Urban Studies and Planning, Institute for Sustainable Solutions, and across the University. Additionally, local and state governmental and non-governmental organizations in the greater Portland metropolitan area provide excellent opportunities for community-engaged scholarship.

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement

The starting annual salary rate for this position will be dependent upon qualifications and experience with an excellent benefits package including 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon Public Universities.
