Position Summary

The Associate Vice President for Government Relations reports to the Vice President for Public Affairs. The AVP oversees PSU’s Office of Government Relations and directs its staff in representing the interests of the university before the Oregon Legislature, Oregon state agencies (including, but not limited to the Oregon Higher Education Commission), local government bodies, Congress, and federal agencies.

Primary Activity A - Administrative
Minimum Qualifications
  • A minimum of seven years of experience working with either local, state, or federal government or in a position advocating in front of same
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Oregon legislative processes and policy arena
Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team
  • Demonstrated ability to work with public and elected officials and higher education administrators and evidence of positive existing relationships with same
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Portland State University and Oregon higher education
  • Demonstrated knowledge of governmental processes and players at local, state and federal levels
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Demonstrated ability to think and plan strategically

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement

The starting annual salary rate for this position will be between $110,0000-$126,000 depending upon qualifications and experience with an excellent benefits package including 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon Public Universities.

In addition, applications should include two ​previously published or distributed ​writing samples: one ​of approximately​ 1,000-1,500 words​ in length​, and one ​of​ approximately 300-600 words in length. ​ ​Both samples should ​demonstrate​ the ability to write concisely and persuasively on a topical issue. Examples include speeches, memos, op-eds, testimony​, etc.
