Position Summary

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the Portland State University Graduate School of Education is seeking a tenure track faculty member at the Assistant Professor level in teacher education with expertise in bilingual/multicultural education and a foundation in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) education.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate and undergraduate level classes in the curriculum and instruction department, emphasizing bilingual education, ESOL education, and multicultural/diversity courses and in related scholarly interest areas. In addition, the chosen candidate will conduct and publish research in these areas. The individual will participate in the refinement and/or development of the Bilingual, Dual-Language, and ESOL programs in collaboration with other program faculty.

Primary Activity I - Instructional
Minimum Qualifications

• Earned doctorate in education or related field, preferable focus on dual-language, bilingual, multilingual, ESOL, multicultural education, or equivalent from an accredited program by time of start date.
• Evidence of at least 3 years of professional experience working in a K-8 (elementary) school setting.
• Experience collaborating with school district partners & colleagues.
• Bilingual proficiency – Spanish/English or other language/English.
• Experience in multicultural, multilingual and diverse settings.
• Evidence of scholarly accomplishments or scholarly agenda by clearly articulating current and next steps in own research agenda.
• Successful completion of a criminal background check.

Preferred Qualifications

• Grant writing experience.
• Administrative and program coordination experience.
• Working with or teaching in a Dual-Language setting (focus on PreK-8).
• Teaching experience & background in Bilingual/ESOL/Multicultural Education (ie: Foundations in Bilingual Education and/or Second Language Acquisition).
• Demonstrated commitment to a critical perspective, social justice and issues of equity.
• Record of working collaboratively with linguistically and culturally diverse students, parents, and community partners.
• Utilizing technology in instructional settings.
• Working with and/or mentoring groups of preservice teachers.
• Ability to develop and teach university courses in Spanish
settings.
• Working with and/or mentoring groups of preservice teachers.

The starting annual salary rate for this position will be competitive, with an excellent benefits package including 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon Public Universities.
